Hope you enjoy these pictures that I took of the desert
around my neighborhood. The cactus and vegetation
of the Tucson desert is so different from anywhere else
in Arizona ~ I've provided links to other pages
that will tell you all about the particular cactus.

Small 'wash' running through desert ~ runs only when
it rains. Cactus with yellow on top is called
a barrel cactus. Our desert will start
'blooming' by March.

Magnificent Saguaro cactus standing
in center of photo.

Some natural desert vegetation

Another view of the saguaro

Here is a barrel cactus over on it's side..
directly behind it is a prickly pear cactus and
behind that the larger one with little arms is
called a cholla (aka jumping cactus)

The cholla cactus up close... notice the new fruit
it's growing.

We call them jumping cactus ~ mainly because
if you get too close it seems they are stuck
on you ~ and not an easy cactus to dislodge.
We tell the tourist ~ stay away from the cholla
cactus.

The desert at dusk

The desert with the Tucson Mts in the background
just before sunset

Saguaro cactus ~ almost a clump
of them ~ The age of each
would be vastly different given the
sizes and arms on some and lack of arms
on others.

Two saguaro's ~ the one of the the
right looks to be failing ~ a slow death...

These are desert 'bushes' know on
creosote bushes
They help give a lot of color to the desert

Final shot ~ this is at house near mine ~
in their yard they have a beautiful saguaro
next to our American flag. I really thought
it made for a great photo.
